About
I'm Simon Krol.
I'm an artist.
I live and work in Sussex.
Mostly, I draw eyes.
I've been making pictures for most of my life.
Sometimes constantly.
Sometimes not at all.
The gaps are part of the story too.
For years I thought I was making portraits.
I'm less certain now.
I think I make pictures about attention.
About looking.
And being looked at.
I've lived with depression, anxiety and trauma.
They've taken things from me.
Time, mostly.
Art didn't make any of that worthwhile.
But making things has sometimes helped me find my way back.
I like paper.
Black ink.
White space.
Birds.
Old faces.
Imperfections.
And things that don't explain themselves too quickly.
I don't know exactly what art is for.
I suspect that's healthy.
But I know what I hope mine does.
For a moment, I hope it makes somebody feel noticed.
